Valentine’s Day Beauty
Valentine’s Day is about love and pampering. You can pamper yourself or a special someone. Here are some great ideas to make as gifts or just treat yourself! Bubble Bath: 1 /4 cup liquid Castile Soap (you can find this at the drugstore), 2 drops Red food coloring, 10 drops rose oil or your favorite essential oil, Rose petals.

DIY Valentine’s Day Beauty Recipes
Mom and beauty writer Erika Katz demonstrates ways to whip up mother-daughter pampering fun for Valentine’s Day. A beauty writer as well as a former child model and actress, Erika Katz has been a beauty junkie nearly all her life. Using her experience from her days working in a magazine beauty department as well as in television and modeling, Katz penned Bonding Over Beauty, A Mother-Daughter Guide to Self-Esteem, Confidence and Trust (Greenleaf Press). As the mother of a tween girl, she now writes a popular beauty blog, www.bondingoverbeauty.com. Read More

FOR SOFT CURLS
“For Valentine’s Day, I love soft curls. They are sexy and romantic,” says beauty expert and author ofBonding over Beauty, Erika Katz. If you have straight or wavy hair, wash and blow dry your hair, and make sure it is really dry before setting your hair in hot rollers. For limp, fine hair, leave in rollers as long as possible. Rollers will smooth the cuticle and give nice body — skip the hair spray though; gummy hair is not sexy!
SUBTLY SEXY MAKEUP
“As far as makeup, women think you have to wear red lipstick. Red lipstick is very messy for kissing as is any dark pigmented lipstick,” Katz says. Line your lips with a nude liner, she suggests. Then fill in your lips with the liner. Put a sheer light lipstick or gloss over it.For eyes, if you plan on a night of love, curl your lashes and use a silicone-based mascara — Trish McEvoy makes a great one. This won’t end up under your eyes at the end of the night. Read More

Tish helps Miley apply a scrub and the girls get mother-daughter manis!
Miley tweeted her affection for mom, Tish, on Mother’s Day and shared a pic of their nail polishes of choice. Do you and your mom every try at-home beauty treatments?I love that Miley and her mom did something together on Mother’s Day! The star tweeted about the scrub her mom helped her apply, saying, “This has been the best M-Day ever @TishCyrus1 I love u so much! I don’t know many people that would sit and scrub MY body on THEIR day! Just before their scrub-a-thon, Miley tweeted a pic of their chosen manicure colors, pointing out how different they were by their choice of colors (Miley had a bright red and Tish a light pink). It reminds me of when I get a mani with my mom! She always picks a neutral shade and I love going wild with color! Miley and her mom are bonding in a very special way, according to Erika Katz, author of the bookBonding Over Beauty. Making and applying DIY treatments is one of the best ways to bond! “I love to make homemade lipgloss, face masks, and body scrubs with my daughter using everyday ingredients you find in most kitchens,” Katz tells HollywoodLife.com. “That way we have the shared experience of making the treatments as well as applying them.”Bonding over a shared past time can be a great way to relax and “it starts by spending quality time with mom doing something you both enjoy,” adds Katz. Are you reading this, mom? Hop on the train to NYC … mani’s on me!
Do you ever try at-home treatments or splurge on mani/pedis?

HOT READING…
Bonding over Beauty: A Mother-Daughter Beauty Guide to Foster Self-esteem, Confidence, and Trust
Rebecca’s Take: Great and instbook. As a busy mother of two ‘tween girls, I was excited to read Bonding over Beauty as I am always in search of more ways to keep connected with my daughters. The book gives practical tips for taking care of your body, from keeping hair and face clean to the basics of shaving and applying makeup. What I most appreciated about the book is its straightforward language that makes it very suitable for reading together aloud with your daughter(s). Most impressive was the section on nutrition and fitness with an emphasis on promoting healthy self-esteem. www.bondingoverbeauty.com

VG: What are the top 2 major self esteem issues, in your experience, that young girls have?
ERICA: I think weight is a big issue for many young girls. Especially because we come in so many different shapes and sizes, it is important not to compare yourself to models in magazines. The other major issue involves face and hair. Girls have a lot of issues with how their hair looks because we always want what we don’t have. Acne can also cause a lot of self-esteem issues during a girl’s teen years. Read More

I always tell girls to try to dress and wear their hair in a way that works for their look rather than follow every trend. Right now, blue eye liner and shadows are in style. They can look great if you have blue eyes and fair skin, and it is fun to experiment with colors. But, if you have olive skin and brown eyes the blue just won’t look right. Some people have the face for short hair and if it’s in style, then cut your hair short. But, if you have a really round face without defined cheekbones, a chin length bob is just not going to look right. My advice is to have your own style and not try to copy other people. For moms anywhere, forming healthy mother-daughter relationships can be tricky at best, especially when girls begin to hit the famously rebellious stage of right before and during their teenage years. Author Erika Katz Teaches Mothers How To ‘Bond Over Beauty’
Katz was inspired to write the book as one day she was sitting with her daughter who’d had a bad day at school. When she asked what was wrong – her daughter would not talk to her. Later as she was cutting her daughter’s nails her daughter started to tell her that a girl at school had been mean to her. Katz finished her nails but wanted to hear the rest of the story so she grabbed a scrub and started scrubbing her daughter’s hands. She rinsed the scrub off but wanted her daughter to finish the story so she grabbed the moisturizer and began to give her daughter a manicure. The next day her daughter wouldn’t talk to her again so she started braiding her daughter’s hair. Katz realized that when women go to the hair dresser they tend to reveal everything on their minds, so she decided that this might also be a way to get girls to talk during their tween years when they don’t really want to tell you everything. Katz believes, “When you are doing something together you can get your children talking and that is how the concept of ‘Bonding Over Beauty’ started.” Read More

It’s all about listening, staying positive, validating and compromising with your child, said Erika Katz, author of “Bonding Over Beauty: A Mother-Daughter Guide to Self-Esteem, Confidence and Trust.” These days, a sense of fashion is imbued as early as age 8, Katz said, as children are inundated with trends from TV channels like Disney and Nickelodeon. Generally, a parent can get away with shopping for a child younger than 10 years old, but at age 10, when it becomes more difficult to size a child to impending puberty, it’s best to bring him or her along, Katz said. Former child model and actress turned beauty expert Erika Katz recommends some quick and easy DIY recipes in her book, Bonding Over Beauty. The key ingredients for an at-home anti-ager? Bananas and cream. “Bananas contain vitamins A and E. Vitamin A heals the skin and is great for flakiness; Vitamin E nourishes the skin,” she notes. And the fat in cream softens dry skin and keeps it elastic, according to Katz. She also suggests honey, a natural humectant, which helps retain moisture. Read More

Katz realized the relational power in sharing beauty rituals with your child, from washing your face together to making natural facemasks to picking out vegetables at the farmer’s market to selecting colors for her first lip gloss. “If your daughter wants to wear make-up, the worst thing you can do is say, ‘No way, you can’t.’ She will think you are clueless,” Katz says. “If you can’t talk to her about lip gloss, she won’t think you can talk to her when it comes to sex.” Read More

Bonding Over Beauty By Erika Katz (Interview)
“First of all….I must say kudos to a beautiful concept you have created. A much needed one at that! What inspired you to write the book Bonding Over Beauty? I went to a parenting meeting in my community and moms were talking about how their nine and ten year old daughters were getting hair under the arms, above their lip, and were showing signs of puberty all before they had given up playing with dolls. The moms did not know how to broach these sticky subjects with their girls either because they did not have all the information or were just too embarrassed to talk about it. So, I decided to write a book to tell moms what to say to their daughters and how to say it. I wanted this difficult time in a young girl’s life to be a bonding experience with mom rather than a series of door-slammings and “mom, you just don’t understand.” Read more
